Nuestra Señora de Atocha (Our lady of Atocha)
Atocha, as referred to by most people, was a treasure galleon and the best known of the fleet of ships that sank in a hurricane in 1622 off the Florida Keys. At the time of her sinking, the Atocha was carrying a large cargo of gold, silver, gems along with other riches from South America. She was sailing from Havana and bound for Spain.
The Treasure was later recovered by an expedition led by Mel Fisher in 1985. Following the recovery, Mel Fischer faced a lengthy legal battle with the State of Florida which later awarded the finders sole ownership of the treasure.
